The Gallery
The Butternut Gallery and Second Story Books opened on July first, 2005.

While the wisdom of opening a gallery featuring the works of regional, national and international artists and a bookstore with an intelligent and unusual selection of titles in a small community in a primarily rural county in Northeastern Pennsylvania did not escape owners Tom Canouse and Betty Bryden, it was a passion that needed an outlet. There has never been reason to look back.

Montrose is curiously blessed with an appreciative audience of "lookers at art," an amazing creative community of artists, writers, musicians and performers and people who understand the joy of knowing and supporting artists.

Butternut Gallery & Second Story Books; an odd name suggesting nothing of the work to be found within. Where did the name come from? Tom is a wood carver and his favorite wood to work with is butternut; our dearest friend and a gallery potter is Alice Siegfried - her favorite squash (which she can grow in abundance in the worst weather year) is butternut... so when you are looking for a name for your new endeavor, go with logic!

Second Story Books is another of Tom's outlets with used and remaindered books for the serious reader - a modest but worthy collection.

The gallery is open mid February through December featuring artists in monthly exhibition. We also have classes, workshops and a lecture series - Sundays at the Butternut.

Our email list offers a gallery and bookstore update twice monthly. To sign up, email Betty at Check here monthly for views of our current exhibition and works by artists carried regularly.

Join us in supporting the wonderful and worthwhile.
