The Butternut Gallery and Second Story Books opened on July first,
While the wisdom of opening a gallery featuring the works
of regional, national and international artists and a bookstore with an intelligent
and unusual selection of titles in a small community in a primarily rural county
in Northeastern Pennsylvania did not escape owners Tom Canouse and Betty Bryden,
it was a passion that needed an outlet. There has never been reason to look back.
is curiously blessed with an appreciative audience of "lookers at art," an amazing
creative community of artists, writers, musicians and performers and people who
understand the joy of knowing and supporting artists.
Gallery & Second Story Books; an odd name suggesting nothing of the work to be
found within. Where did the name come from? Tom is a wood carver and his favorite
wood to work with is butternut; our dearest friend and a gallery potter is Alice
Siegfried - her favorite squash (which she can grow in abundance in the worst
weather year) is butternut... so when you are looking for a name for your new
endeavor, go with logic!
